Darlington Piano Society welcomes Romanian-born pianist, Alexandra Vaduva, for its recital at 3pm on Sunday 8th December 2019, in Central Hall, Dolphin Centre.

Alexandra began playing the piano at the age of 4 and came to the UK in 2009 to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she has successfully completed the Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts and Advanced Diploma courses. She is currently a PhD student researching the piano compositions of her fellow Romanian, George Enescu.

The varied and challenging programme begins with two sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, whose sonatas (555 in total!) are extremely attractive and appealing pieces.  In between Schubert’s early sonata in A minor, D537 which follows, and Beethoven’s ever popular ‘Moonlight’ sonata which end the programme, she plays 20th-century works with Bartok’s impressionistic Suite Op.14 and two works by her compatriot Enescu.  The Suite Op 3/1, commonly known by its subtitle ‘Suite dans le style ancien’, is redolent of the styles of Bach, Couperin, Handel and Scarlatti among others and two movements from the Suite Op 18/3, ‘the Choral and the Carillon nocturne’ were written in the quiet of the Romanian Carpathians, in June and July 1916, a month before Romania entered WW1.
