Darlington Dance Festival Mass Dance 2018 – Express yourself! for mental health – takes place on Sunday 20th May from 1pm. This year’s theme is promoting mental health and wellbeing.

The event brings local dance schools and community groups together to perform one mass dance choreographed by Debbie Harbin of the D project and Darrien Wright of Dance Wright Studios. At last year’s Mass Dance, 800 dancers strutted their stuff in the market place (pictured: photo by Scott Akoz).

This year the organisers want more people than ever to get involved especially those who don’t usually dance or may have been affected by mental health issues. So many people are affected by mental ill health at some point in their life and the Mass Dance wants people to talk, dance and most of all feel good.

If groups want to take part, the organisers can come to you and teach the Mass Dance, or you can attend weekly open sessions each Friday from 20 April to 18 May at 1pm in the Dolphin Centre and evening sessions at Dance Wright Studio on Thursdays 11th and 17th May at 7pm.

There will be information stalls at the Mass Dance; charities or support groups for people with mental health issues can contact the Mass Dance organisers to get involved.

Darrien Wright of Dance Wright Studio said: “This is a unique event and we want everyone to join us, to express yourself! Feel the benefits of dance and be part of an amazing community event, come and have a go.”

Joanne Scott Chair of the Dance Festival Association said: “The market place is brought to life with such a buzz that the Mass Dance creates. This year is a chance to do something special at the same time and raise awareness of mental health issues and how dancing can have a positive impact on our wellbeing.”

The Dance Festival 2018 kicks off on Saturday 19th May in Joseph Pease place with the ballet dancers’ street-theatre act and many performances throughout the day from local dance schools.

The event is organised by Darlington Dance Festival Association – a voluntary group who come together to get Darlo dancing.
