The final recital of Darlington Piano Society’s 2021-22 season, in Central Hall, the Dolphin Centre, at 3pm on Sunday 24th April, brings the series to a magnificent close with one of the most demanding pieces of the repertoire – for both player and audience alike – Beethoven’s mighty “Hammerklavier” sonata. This is the longest and most colossal of Beethoven’s solo piano works.
The recital is given by Jerusalem born, London based, 24-year-old Ariel Lanyi. Ariel won 3rd Prize (The Roslyn Lyons Bronze Medal) at the Leeds International Piano Competition in September 2021, playing the work in his semi-final performance. 2021 was a remarkably busy year for Ariel as he was also a prize winner in the YCAT (London) and Concert Artists Guild (New York) International Auditions, made his debut at Wigmore Hall and participated in the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont as well as giving recitals as far away as Vancouver and Colombia; and his recording of music by Schubert for Linn Records was released.
“Performances of the Hammerklavier sonata are fairly rare occasions” comments chairman Greg Johnson. The one and only previous performance for the Society was given by Paul Lewis in January 2005 so it is due this welcome return. Ariel’s programme also includes book 3 of Albeniz’s “Iberia”, another first performance for the Society and a work of a totally distinctive character, together with pieces by Schumann”.
