As many will know, the historic Stockton & Darlington Railway was mainly financed by Quaker families, led by Edward Pease, like the other renowned Quaker firms of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such as those of Abraham Darby or the Rowntrees.
The family went on to provide the infrastructure and mines for the Tees Valley’s growth, and to lead the politics of Darlington and South Durham.
The FSDR are a group of people who want to see the Railway receive the recognition and the protection it deserves and have successfully partnered local authorities and funding bodies to prepare for 2025, especially through archaeological conservation work.
Historic England are supporting us in this study to understand further the importance of the Quaker community to the S & DR and the political, industrial and social fabric of the area.
The new study, over the period to spring, 2023 is meant hopefully to ask new questions in the historical context as it is now seen.

• Attending the informal meetings and taking part in discussion, and possibly
• Proposing an intervention or short talk on an aspect of interest to you, which will be most welcome
