After a tour of the improvements so far, we have an update from Jo Potter on how they are taking shape:

This is the second stage to reconfigure some 40% of the internal market space now that roof repairs are complete. It will provide a small stage and a bar area, room for audience, six street food stalls and……..plenty of toilets! The remainder of the market hall will continue to provide stalls for traders and Darlington is making a grant available to help them with the cost of upgrading their stalls. The Council and developers are keen to ensure they maintain and highlight the Victorian construction features.

This is a really exciting project! It is hoped to reopen the whole of the Market next month, but stage 3, the design and installation of the external garden café areas, will take another twelve to eighteen months.

If you are involved in performance, this is also a call for ideas and bookings for the use of the performance area. The Market will stay open until 11pm most nights. So plenty of time for evening performances.
