Darlington Stitch & Create members are looking forward to a presentation on Saturday 4th February by artist embroiderer Melanie Kyles
‘Embroidery in the Age of Technology’
Melanie will provide us with a summary of her presentation with the following:
- ‘Embroidery constantly reinvents, adapts and innovates to remain relevant in our ever-evolving creative industries.
- There have been a number of challenges and opportunities for embroidery, including globalisation, the mechanisation of hand embroidery at the turn of the 19th Century, and digitisation in the 1980’s.
- In our current age where technological progressions seem to go from strength to strength, this talk explores Manus x Machina, how digital embroidery has transformed the accessibility and production of embroidery including mass personalisation, how wearable tech and embellishment coexist and how digital and technological trends have inspired innovative designs that remain loyal to traditional techniques.’
Her talk promises to be thought provoking and throw a spotlight on our 21st century approach and opportunities, however, Melanie has a real and personal appreciation of the enjoyment and value to be found in hand stitching.
